This course will travel to Rio de Janeiro to study Brazilian History, Culture and Memory. Using the cosmopolitan city of Rio as its classroom, this program will build particpants' understanding of the ways in which Brazilians shape and find meaning in their historical memory. The course will include excursions to the city of São Paulo as well as the colonial mining city of Ouro Preto, located in Brazil's south-central mountain range. During the program, students will live with host families and will also take intensive Portuguese language courses (with 6 different language levels taught at Rio's Catholic University, participants will not need prior Portuguese language experience). The program will be conducted in partnership with Emory and Vanderbilt Universities and will accord credit on the basis of the following two options:
OPTION 1: Students will participate in an intensive four week course. The program fee ($3,750) will cover the homestay, language classes, excursions and the History, Culture and Memory course. The course will carry 3 credit/hours.
OPTION 2: Students will participate in a six-week course that will also include the preparation of an independent study project. The program fee ($7,000) will cover the same items above, but the course will carry 6 credit/hours.
For more information, contact Prof. Jerry Dávila, Dept. of History (/x4396)
Program Details Students will be hosted in private homes with Brazilian families. Housing, curriculum and a broad variety of excursions are designed to build proficiency in the Portuguese language and increase knowledge of Brazilian culture, politics, economics and society.
For students enrolling in the four-week option, the course credit will reflect the student's combined work in an appropriate level language course and in the history seminar Brazilian Culture and Society. Students enrolling in the six-week option will receive separate credit for the language course and for the history seminar. The course Brazilian Culture and Society will be taught in English with optional occasional concurrent sessions in Portuguese. The course will consist of academic excursions, guest lectures and individual final research project.
Cost Four week, 3 credit/hours: $3750 Six week, 6 credit/hours: $7000
Includes fees for credit hours, health and accident insurance (duration of program), accommodations and a weekly lunch stipend during the period that the language course is in session. Also includes overnight excursions to São Paulo and Ouro Petro and day long excursions to Petropólis, Sugarloaf and the Cristo Redentor, transportation during program related excursions.
Credit: Students can receive credit for the 4-week course as a Portuguese language course (based on the level of Portuguese studied in the program), or as a Special Topics in History course (HIST 3000). Pending approval of the Latin American Studies Major by the UNCC Board of Governors, students would also have the option of receiving Latin American Studies credit.
